The State of UEFN heading into 2024
It may be hard to believe, but the current Fortnite we know and love is just the tip of the iceberg.
Fortnite made a huge splash in 2023 with their creator economy 2.0 and subsequent release of UEFN, paying out over $200 million to creators. Total UGC earnings in gaming reached $1.32 billion in 2023 up 30% yoy.
And we’re still crazy early. So early in fact, that UEFN is technically still a beta, rolling out new features seemingly every week. Creativity is currently capped by limitations on the UEFN toolset, which is why most popular maps are all in the same 2-4 game modes. If you go to Fortnite looking for new experiences, don’t be surprised if you’re disappointed.
The good news is, this chapter is soon to be a relic of the past.
Introducing: Verse Persistence! This upgrade to Verse, the new coding language native to UEFN, will allow UGC creators to save significantly more player data.
What does this mean? Longer and more worthwhile games for the players, and more incentives to push the boundaries of the platform for creators.
If there’s one thing that the Chartis creator community is excited by, its Verse persistence.
Think RPGs…Strategy…Survival! (Civilization V in Fortnite?!)
In the next 6 months, the entire Fortnite Creative ecosystem could be flipped on its head.
Over 10,000 creators are making games on Fortnite, with their average earnings being around $20,000/month. While the split of revenue amongst creators is a bit precarious right now, this will start to change as more becomes possible.
YouTube had around 10,000 creators in 2008. We’re so damn early.
